you missed the braces:
http://{siteurl}/syntages/mageiriki/${catname}/${id}-${alias}

Needed to retrieve the placeholder value....

I really think you should because the manual might be quite thorough but it's a bit too technical. Not too easy to understand how it works without some real life examples. Once one has some real life examples, then it's quite straight forward.
